When Sunbathers Escaped Violence, Viral Picture Captures Lifeguard Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Scene.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the iconic beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed cracking sounds ringing out through the neighbourhood.
“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore signaled trouble had occurred.
Positioned on the street, speaking to a couple who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was alone moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running into something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to go in the opposite direction.
“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal running.”
An Iconic Image of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy
The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many instances of valour in the wake of the tragic event.
Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, law enforcement and paramedics treating many the injured.
Local Outpouring and Solidarity
Doolan’s story was a single example among several to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the beach facility next to the site of the violence serving as a impromptu treatment center. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including rushing into the ocean to save people in distress.
After the tragedy, comments of support circulated widely. A social media message expressed gratitude for the lifeguards who showed that “kindness will always overcome evil”.
The group of beach patrol later shared a communication, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what happened”.
“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the care directed at our team,” the group commented. “In time, we will share our stories in the belief that it supports those impacted.”
Local Government Recognition
Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional lifeguards, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the incident started right into late that evening.
“People have shared so many emotional accounts, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” said a mayor.
“These individuals exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores safe for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.
“During this time of sorrow and process the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such darkness.”
