The esteemed football figure has stated that he is avoiding a return to football management, noting that it would be tough to duplicate the special mission he encountered as head of the Three Lions.

The former coach suggested his aim to channel his attention toward working with the next generation and combating what he described as a pervasive negative narrative presently prevalent in the country.

Exploring New Avenues Away from Football

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was asked about talk linking him with vacant management roles in the English football and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Leading up to the launch of his forthcoming publication, his leadership-focused book, he emphasized that he is highly enthusiastic about setting examples for teenagers, drawing on lessons from his period as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

The leader believes that his time coaching England, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, the coach remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Division

The former manager insisted that “the British people share more commonalities than differences” but that the public discourse often highlights division.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s new release, Dear England, is scheduled to offer deeper reflections on guidance and country pride drawn from his remarkable time in football.
