The 2026 cars are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious relative to present-day cars.

Formula 1 has unveiled the simplified terminology that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 regulations.

The sport is embarking on what is potentially the largest rules overhaul in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, requiring significant developments in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, pilots will strategically manage battery power – including during qualifying laps – to secure the best result.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a wide range of fans, including new, casual and core fans, to determine which terms would improve understanding of the main elements of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to render a set of intricate technical aspects of the racing as accessible as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, older technical labels for specific components – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the moveable wings – have been abandoned in preference for intuitive labels that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the innovation.

What's the New Technology?

The FIA states that competitors will have more power to determine tactics regarding battery management, regeneration, and efficiency.

The 2026 rules introduce a set of functions that will be clearly indicated on TV overlays to aid the fans' insight of the strategic duel.

  • Passing Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a car is less than a second the leading car to facilitate an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be used in attack or defence. It grants the driver peak output at the push of a button.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is capped.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight lowered by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will inevitably claw this back as they refine their designs.

Aerodynamic drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will feature moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straights to improve speed and enhance velocity and return into place for peak handling.

Tyres will continue to use 18-inch rims, but the tyres themselves will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in horsepower generated by the internal combustion engine and the battery and motor, increasing from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.
