The winter recruitment period is always a time of feverish rumour and potential big-money moves. A number of high-profile footballers are being connected to transfers out of their current clubs. This article explores a selection of the key names that might be changing clubs this month.

A. Semenyo

Although Ghana's inability to reach the Africa Cup of Nations, which has left the player in contention, it appears an important transfer is imminent. This Bournemouth attacker has a contract with a sizeable release clause active for a two-week period in early January. Recent developments suggest the Premier League champions have emerged as his services. Other interested parties such as Tottenham and Chelsea are said to have turned their attention to other targets, potentially opening the door for clubs like Liverpool or Manchester United to attempt a last-minute bid.

Marc Guéhi

The England centre-back has continued to impress for Crystal Palace despite a previous transfer to Anfield falling through. With his contract due to expire in the close season, January is the London club's final opportunity to obtain a fee for their captain. Numerous elite clubs, such as City and several continental powerhouses including Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, reportedly hold an interest. Yet, a January exit remains difficult, particularly given the manager's dependence on the defender.

Brennan Johnson

This Welsh forward has found first-team minutes limited at Spurs this term. Although being the side's leading goalscorer last season, he has begun only a small number of Premier League matches. It is understood the North London club is open to a transfer for the right valuation, thought to be in the around forty million pounds. The Cherries are currently leading the chase, with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford also credited with an interest.

This Portugal playmaker could be set for a comeback to the Premier League after a spell in the Saudi Pro League. Additionally, there have been rumours from Spain that he is prepared to take a reduced salary for a switch to Real Madrid.

M. ter Stegen

This experienced Germany goalkeeper finds himself as third-choice at Barça following the coach Flick. After fallen out of favour and had an operation, a January exit seems highly probable. Villa were once mentioned as a potential destination, but that option now appears off. Instead, clubs from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are reportedly showing curiosity in the 33-year-old.

I. Toney

The prolific English centre-forward has kept finding the net regularly in the Middle East. A return to the Premier League might enhance his fading hopes of making the national World Cup. However, securing a transfer poses major challenges. Al-Ahli do not wish to sell him, and his reported huge weekly wages render any agreement complicated. Everton, Tottenham, and Manchester United have all been mentioned as interested parties.

C. Gallagher

Because of FIFA regulations regarding playing for two clubs in a campaign, a move back to his parent club prior to next summer seems to be the only viable outcome.

Kenan Yildiz

This highly-rated Turkey attacker is in fine form for the Italian giants this term. As his existing deal running down, many Premier League clubs – such as Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool – are monitoring the developments. Juventus are desperate to secure the youngster to a new long-term contract but are in a race to keep one of the continent's most promising young talents.

Kees Smit

The highly-touted Dutch midfielder has earned comparisons to Kevin De Bruyne for his playing style. Following impressing at the U19 Euros, Smit has broken into the AZ Alkmaar side. The 19-year-old is heavily tipped to make a big-money transfer in January. Newcastle United are believed to be frontrunners, but are facing stiff rivalry from Real Madrid for a signing priced at approximately £22 million.
