Cameron Norrie earned the most notable victory of his career by rallying from a set down to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win marks Norrie's initial success over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the fifth UK male player in history to defeat a world No 1. "Returning from injury last year, I fell in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to appreciate my performance in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the most significant success of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and probably the strongest competitor in the world right now."

The British player, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight Masters 1000 wins, which represented the top run of results in the young champion's early career.

Game Overview

Alcaraz seemed to be advancing smoothly to success early on as he sailed in the opening set. Yet, Norrie slowly battled back back into the game by delivering with sharper placement and dragging the Spaniard into lengthy, demanding points. His persistent steadiness and consistency gradually took its toll.

For much of the battle, the world number one served well but he had difficulty to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The 22-year-old appeared particularly struggling executing his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the world for much of this year, committing 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, Norrie gave Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his consistency, physicality and power the entire contest while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance inside the baseline and play aggressively.

In the nail-biting closing stages, Norrie expertly held his calm to defeat the top competitor in the sport.

Personal Journey

After dealing for months due to a serious physical setback and struggles with his form, the tennis professional dropped as far down as 91st in the rankings this season. Having reached the last eight at Wimbledon and the French Open fourth round since then, this victory further underlines the experienced player's improvement as he attempts to come back to the elite rankings and further. Alcaraz, notwithstanding his extraordinary accomplishments, is still hasn't figure out how to deliver his top form on indoor courts.
