Everyday tennis enthusiasts will have an opportunity to win A$1m when they compete against world-class athletes - featuring top-ranked the Spanish champion - in a single-point showdown before January's Australian Open

Organizers of the year's first Grand Slam have announced the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will pit a dozen non-professionals against 22 professionals in a knockout tournament at the tournament grounds

How the Event Will Work

Competitors are set to play 'the decision-making game' to determine who serves or receives, and the player who wins the point will progress to the next round

The victor of the event will earn approximately half a million pounds

By comparison, players who advanced to the penultimate round of the men's or women's singles in the previous year's tournament won over a million Australian dollars

The US Open hosted a revamped, standalone mixed doubles tournament in August which prompted top singles players to take part, with the winners receiving $1m

The Australian Open held its first-ever quick-fire event in the current season, but the cash prize was a smaller amount and it generated little publicity

Tournament Specifics

Organizers have not said exactly how the event will work, but it is expected to mirror a akin setup to this year's edition

The professionals will be granted to have a single serve and the amateurs two times - as is the usual procedure in traditional tennis

While it is unclear how the bracket will work, there will be multiple elimination stages and the venue will be the main stadium rather than the alternative court

The concluding rounds will be held in a night session instead of 1pm local time

Competitor Requirements

Domestic competitors - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with the national federation - can compete in 'single-point competition' tournaments at their community centers

The victors of the community events will then go into a draw, with one amateur player from every state and territory chosen to participate in the 'final competition' in a evening match on the specified date

There will also be a qualifying draw in late year which non-professionals, lower ranked pros, celebrities and athletic celebrities can enter

It starts on the starting date and the two winners will qualify for Wednesday's 'final showdown' with the additional everyday players and elite competitors
